classic literature?

I have to do an english assignment, but need help coming up with ideas. The prompt basically asks me the following questions:

What do you think should be the criteria for judging the best novels of the century? What makes a book one of the best? What should disqualify a novel from appearing on a list of the best?

Any opinions or thoughts on the definition of "classic literature"? Any help would be great!

The ideal definition of 'classic' literature is a novel which compels the reader by the reality of it's characters and by their similarity to people we know, or would like to know in real life and by the way the novel reflects the realities of society. Now, personally, I don't know of any great novels written in this century, or the previous 'twentieth' century :) . Novels which pander to a popular opinions of the time, rather than to a deeper understanding of human nature should be dismissed as unworthy. A truly great novel contains characters who not only become part of popular culture, but serve as icons which help change society and help people make decisions on how to live their lives. I offer as an example "Don Quixote" who has inspired countless dreamers, and his companion Sancho Panza, who has fortified countless rationalists.

Why should classic literature, especially that of Western civilization, continue to be taught?

Why should classic literature, especially that of Western civilization, continue to be taught in high school and college campuses?
Hahaha! This isn't homework!

My literature teacher gave a lecture on this in class yesterday and she was really biased about it so I was wondering what ohter people thought!

My homeworj this week is on Shakespeare's As You Like It. Am I asking about that? No.

Classic literature greatly affects modern literature and culture whether we realize it or not. For the sake of the sanity of the students modern literature should be used but it should be balanced with some of the roots too. I mean you don't know how much we reference Shakespeare until you study him and then you have to consider how much Shakespeare references Greek culture and literature. It's amazing once you start seeing the connections.

what are some biblical allusions in classic literature?

I need HELP!!!!! I have a project that i have due very soon and i have to site examples on references to the bible in classic literature
one allusion has to be from the new testament and the other has to be from the old testment. Please help me

If you pick up any book by George MacDonald (the man whose writings greatly influenced C.S. Lewis), you'll find references to both the Old and New Testaments. You can search through some of his works and read them here http://www.online-literature.com/george-macdonald/ and http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/m#a127

There is also Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ by Lew Wallace which references the New Testament. It may also mention the old, since Judah Ben-Hur is a prince of Israel.

Paradise Lost by John Milton makes reference to the Old Testament and the fall of man, etc. You can read it http://www.online-literature.com/milton/paradiselost/ online.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens mentions the nativity - especially The Ghost of Christmas Present mentions Christmas & it's mighty founder being a child.

There are many references throughout various classics, but hopefully these will help.

How is classic literature determined as such?

Who or what determines whether a book will be a classic, or whether an author becomes an author of classic literature? It's not all in the age of the book (as in Shakespeare), because there are modern authors considered to be writers of classic literature. What makes these books special? I love to read, but many of the classics had to read in school were boring and tedious and we were forced to analyze them to death. What makes one author's books more special than another? These days, I would say it's the marketing of the book and publicity (hello, Million Little Pieces) that makes a book sell, but does that make it a better book, or make it a modern classic?

In the traditional sense of the term, a classic book is one written in ancient Greece or ancient Rome (see classics). The word classic can also be applied to literature and other art that is widely considered a model of its form.

Some authors who have written classics are William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Miguel Cervantes, Niccolò Machiavelli, Lao Zi (Lao Tzu), and Confucius. Classics in this sense make up what some call a canon of world literature. The question of what belongs in the canon of Western literature and art is a matter of much dispute.

Most classics are many years old, but sometimes the word is pressed into use to describe newer works. Many classic books are, because of their age, now out of copyright and in the public domain, and of these a large number are freely available online from sources such as Project Gutenberg or The Literature Network.

Mark Twain famously wrote that a "classic" was a "book which people praise and don't read."

What are your picks for classic literature?

My sister's Christmas wish list includes the following:

"classic literature, especially children's books."

What would your top titles be for such a request?

(My sister is an avid reader, so is her husband and they have two kids--a boy who is five and a girl who is eight months.)

Children's books- Anything by Maurice Sendak. You can't go wrong...ie. Where the Wild Things Are and Outside Over There.
Dr. Suess is always popular.
I personally loved the Berenstein Bears when I was little and anything by Mercer Mayer. The don't make children's books like they used to, that's for sure.

Classic Literature (non-children's books)
Hemingway
The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
Steinbeck
Jane Austen ie. Pride and Prejudice
Virginia Woolf
etc...

Hope this helps!
